Process risk assessment

We identify process hazardous events, root causes, consequences, and existing safeguards. We evaluate additional risk mitigation measures and establish functional safety basis of design requirements.

HAZOP (Hazard & Operability Study)

We facilitate comprehensive Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies for chemical and industrial processing units (IEC 61882).

During structured workshop sessions, a multidisciplinary engineering team systematically reviews process nodes using standardized guide words to identify potential deviations from design intent.

For every identified deviation, we document:

• Potential initiating causes
• Worst-case consequences for personnel safety, assets, and the environment
• Existing technical safeguards and procedural controls
• Recommendations for further risk reduction measures
• Action item assignments and target resolution schedules

Deliverables include a full HAZOP study report and a action item tracking register for project execution.

LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis)

We perform semi-quantitative Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) for high-consequence scenario candidates identified during HAZOP or Process Hazard Analysis (PHA).

We evaluate initiating event frequencies, quantify Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) for Independent Protection Layers (IPLs), and calculate mitigated event frequencies. Calculated risk levels are benchmarked against corporate Risk Tolerability Criteria and international safety standards.

The study determines whether existing safeguards suffice or if Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) are required.

SIL Allocation & Target Determination

We perform Safety Integrity Level (SIL) allocation for required Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) in accordance with IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 standards.

Engineering scope includes:

• Compiling Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) registers
• Defining hazardous scenario mechanics and consequence severity
• Establishing process safe state definitions
• Defining trip setpoints, voting logic, and response times
• Determining required Risk Reduction Factors (RRF)
• Assigning Target SIL levels (SIL 1 to SIL 3)
• Preparing Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS) for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)

SIL verification calculations (PFDavg modeling, architectural hardware fault tolerance, and SIL validation testing) can be incorporated upon agreed project scope.

Comprehensive Process Risk Assessment

For operational changes, simple process units, or preliminary engineering phases not requiring a full-scale HAZOP or LOPA, we perform expert qualitative process risk assessments.

We analyze hazardous material inventories, operating parameters, equipment failure modes, human factors, and external environmental threats. Identified scenarios are prioritized on a Risk Matrix to issue practical risk reduction recommendations.
